WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The postseason shutout streak continued for the Hartford field hockey team.
The No. 2 seed Hurricanes (13-3) are now one win away from a state championship after defeating the No. 3 seed Raiders (13-2-1) to advance to the VPA Division II finals.
Hartford scored in each of the first two quarters and cruised from there. Madi Barwood led the way with a goal and an assist. Alice Piper scored the Hurricanes’ other goal and Elsie Davis also had an assist.
Grace Gardner and Paige Trombley played outstanding defense to help preserve Hartford’s lead, and Paige Vielleux made four saves. Hartford had 10 penalty corners to U-32’s five.
“I was thrilled by our calmness and intensity,” Hartford coach Heather Scudder said. “It is a great honor to play in the championship and it has been quite some time since we at Hartford have had that honor.”
The Hurricanes will play No. 1 seed Mt. Abraham in Saturday’s final at 10 a.m. at the University of Vermont in Burlington.
WOODSTOCK — The No. 2 seed Wasps (14-2-1) got past the No. 11 seed Eagles (7-9-1) to advance to the VPA Division II finals.
Hannah Reed scored the opening goal in the 24th minute for Woodstock, and Chloe Masillo scored twice in the second half. Izzy Konijnenberg and Sophia Nisimblat each had an assist.
Woodstock will play No. 4 seed Rice Memorial, which upset top-seeded Harwood Union in the other semifinal. The championship game is Saturday at 1 p.m. in South Burlington.
ORFORD, N.H. — The No. 2 seed Raptors (11-4-2) were upset by the No. 6 seed Eagles (10-5-2) on penalty kicks in the VPA Division IV semifinals.
Arlington Memorial scored the opening goal on a penalty in the second half, but Rivendell equalized in the 75th minute. Ryleigh Butler put home the game-tying goal on an assist from Harper Traendly.
Neither team could score in two 10-minute overtime periods, and the game went to a shootout, which the Eagles won 3-1. Savannah Gray had nine saves for the Raptors.
It’s the end of the line for Rivendell’s seven seniors: Gray, Kylie Taylor, Alexandra McFate, Iris Fukushima, Clara Schiffling, Shyanne Creek and Sierra Flint.
“We played a very good game today and had contributions from all over the field,” Rivendell coach Tim Goodwin said. “I am proud of the girls for the season they put together. Nothing stopped them from playing their hardest. This group of girls was a pleasure to coach and I will miss them.”
