NORWICH — Adults will have an opportunity to take part in the Montshire Museum of Science’s popular Take Apart Day during a Montshire Unleashed event from 7-9 p.m. on Friday.
“It’s kind of like a grown-ups only preview on what we’ll be doing at Take Apart Day the following day,” said Trish Paleo, marketing and communications manager at the Montshire. “We’ve done it in the past and it’s one of the most popular activities we have at the Discovery Lab.”
Montshire Unleashed is for adults age 21 and older and costs $8-$10 to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door and refreshments, including alcoholic beverages, will be available for purchase.
Take Apart Day itself is from noon-3 p.m. on Saturday and is included with museum admission, which costs of $16 for adults and $13 for children ages 2-17.
During the events, people take apart household items including toasters, cameras, hair dryers, toys and more to find gears, cams, linkages, speakers and motors, most of which are donated from community members.
“We get a pretty good range of kids,” Paleo said, adding that participants wear goggles and adhere to other safety measures. “Take Apart Day is something people are familiar with and look forward to.”
While the concept is simple, people are fascinated about looking at the innards of everyday items.
“I think people are just generally excited … by actually taking apart items. It’s not something we get to do very often or think to do very often,” Paleo said.
