CANAAN — One person died and three others were injured following a two-car crash on Route 118 in Canaan on Monday morning, authorities said.
The names of those involved and details of what contributed to the cause of the crash haven’t been released.
The crash, which involved a sedan and an SUV, happened just before 11:30 a.m. near 245 Route 118, which sits about a half-mile north of Cardigan Mountain and Orange roads.
The sedan came to a rest off the roadway in a grassy area, while the SUV stayed on Route 118. Each vehicle had two occupants.
The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team arrived on scene and transported one of the injured people via helicopter from the Canaan Motor Club track, and ambulance personnel transported the others to a nearby medical facility.
An individual with the New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner arrived on scene around 12:40 p.m.
The situation resulted in the closure of Route 118 for several hours; the road reopened to traffic by about 4:30 p.m.
Multiple area departments responded to the scene, including Canaan, Grafton, Enfield and New Hampshire State Police, who are investigating the crash.
“Officers and police worked side-by-side to care for the injured,” the town of Canaan said in an alert. “Their work over the last several hours is a testament to community service. … While no one wants a tragic event, it is reassuring that we have many to respond as a team effort when needed.”
