CROYDON — Residents are invited to an open house and barbecue Saturday to see the recently completed renovations and repairs to “Lil Red,” the town’s one-room schoolhouse that was built in the early 1800s.
The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include games for the children, maybe a dunk tank, and food.
At the 2025 annual school district meeting, voters approved a $353,000 bond for a number of improvements to the Village School. Work began right after school ended for the year in June.
Upgrades included bringing the bathroom into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, said School Board Chairman Aaron McKeon. The roof and classroom flooring were replaced, the exterior brick repointed, the roof belfry refurbished, the front portico redone, insulation added to the basement, and the attic insulation was replaced. The parking lot is also being paved, which McKeon said will make it easier to plow and eliminate any mess caused during mud season in the spring.
The village school was for grades K-4, but at the meeting where the bond was approved, voters also approved an article to transition grades 1-12 to other schools and make the village school for pre-K and kindergarten only.
McKeon said the school can hold up to 14 children, and as of now, they have 10 registered for the upcoming school year. McKeon also said a modular classroom on the property is no longer in use, and the school board is considering options for its removal.
