MLB Roundup: Nats, Yanks Forced to Wait

Washington — Tyler Austin hit a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly as the Yankees rallied from a three-run deficit, and Tuesday night’s game between New York and the Washington Nationals was suspended with the score 3-3 after 5½ innings because of rain.

The teams waited for more than an hour but play did not resume. The game is scheduled to continue at 5:05 p.m. today before the finale of the two-game interleague series.

New York entered with the best record in the major leagues at 28-12 after a 19-3 spurt. Following a 7-2 homestand, the Yankees started a stretch that has them play 19 of their next 25 games on the road.

Cubs 3, Braves 2

Atlanta — Cubs catcher Willson Contreras helped Chicago throw out two runners at home plate and another at third base before rallying for two runs in the ninth inning, pulling off a stunning victory over Atlanta.

After Ronald Acuna Jr. broke a 1-1 tie with a mammoth homer in the eighth, the Cubs bounced back against closer Arodys Vizcaino to hand the Braves a loss that really stung — especially after a couple of questionable calls went against the home team in a wild fifth inning.

Back-to-back doubles by Albert Almora Jr. and Addison Russell tied it at 2, and Ben Zobrist came through with a two-out, run-scoring single off Vizcaino (1-2).

Padres 4, Rockies 0

San Diego — Right-hander Jordan Lyles came within five outs of the first perfect game in San Diego history before allowing a single to Trevor Story.

Lyles (1-1), who moved into the rotation last week, retired the first 22 Rockies batters before Story’s single with one out in the eighth inning landed just in front of left fielder Franchy Cordero.

Marlins 4, Dodgers 2

Miami — Los Angeles went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position against Wei-Yin Chen and four relievers and was beaten by a last-place team for the fifth straight game. Los Angeles managed only five hits after being swept in a four-game series at home by woeful Cincinnati.

Pirates 7, White Sox 0

Pittsburgh — Trevor Williams scattered six hits in seven strong innings, Adam Frazier homered to start a four-run first, and Pittsburgh beat Chicago. Williams (5-2) struck out six and walked none in his longest outing of the season.

Tigers 9, Indians 8

Detroit— JaCoby Jones homered and doubled, and Detroit rallied against Andrew Miller during a five-run seventh inning to beat Cleveland.

The Indians led 4-0 and 8-4 before Detroit’s breakthrough seventh for its third straight win.

Twins 4, Cardinals 1

Minneapolis — Bobby Wilson hit his first home run in more than a year, Jose Berrios bounced back with strong effort on the mound, and Minnesota beat St. Louis.

Wilson, a journeyman catcher for six different teams in nine major league seasons, hit a slider from St. Louis reliever Luke Gregerson into the left field stands for a two-run homer to cap a three-run seventh inning.

Rays 6, Royals 5

Kansas City, Mo. — Joey Wendle singled in a run with two outs in the ninth inning to lift Tampa Bay over Kansas City.

Jonny Venters (1-0) got two outs for his first victory since Sept. 27, 2012 while with Atlanta against the Mets. The left-hander had been out since 2012 due to four major elbow surgeries, including three Tommy John operations, before returning to the majors this season.

Beltre Out Again

Seattle — Adrian Beltre’s return from the disabled list lasted just five games.

The Texas Rangers put the third baseman back on the DL on Tuesday, two days after he aggravated his left hamstring injury. The 39-year-old has 3,080 hits and is batting .314 in 29 games this season, his 21st in the big leagues.

The Cardinals placed Adam Wainwright back on the 10-day disabled list after the right-hander struggled with velocity in his last start and said he needed “to pause and get it right.”

The 36-year-old Wainwright was on the DL with elbow inflammation before returning Sunday in San Diego, but he lasted just 2⅓ innings in the Cardinals’ 5-3 loss to the Padres.

Arizona center fielder A.J. Pollock has a broken left thumb and is expected to be sidelined for four to eight weeks.

The 30-year-old Pollock is batting .293 with 11 home runs and is second in the National League with 33 RBIs. He was an All-Star in 2015, but has not played more than 112 games in a season since because of injuries.

Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes was out of the lineup on Tuesday night because of a strained right hip flexor and could be headed to the disabled list.

A precautionary MRI showed a mild strain, the team said. Brandon Nimmo was set to play left field in Cespedes’ place against the Toronto Blue Jays in a game delayed by rain at the start.

General manager Sandy Alderson said the club will decide in the next couple of days whether to put Cespedes on the 10-day DL. Alderson said he spoke to Cespedes about that possibility and the All-Star outfielder was “prepared to be realistic about his situation.”
