White River Junction — The spring season of the Hartford Parks and Recreation Department’s Wednesday Walkers series kicks off next week with a hike along the Colette Trail in Enfield.

Wednesday Walkers is for anyone interested in getting an easy taste of the outdoors. Open to all ages, walks take place at locations around the Upper Valley. Aside from Wednesday’s trek, the spring schedule also includes trips to the Gile Mountain Trail in Norwich on May 4 and Hartford’s Hazen Trail on May 18.

All hikers meet at Hartford Town Hall at 9 a.m. on the day of the walk for transportation to the scheduled hike’s trailhead.

All trails are rated easy to moderate, and all hikes end by noon. Participants are asked to dress appropriately for the day, wearing hiking shoes and ideal clothes as well as bringing along a light snack and water.

All hikes are free of charge, although Hartford Rec asks participants to register in advance at www.hartfordrec.com or call 802-295-5036.

On Two Wheels Rhim Wins for Furman

Piney Flats, Tenn. — Norwich’s Brendan Rhim grabbed another collegiate cycling win for his Furman University team on Sunday, taking the 66-mile road race at the Milligan College Cycling Classic.

Rhim, a sophomore, broke away from Lees-McRae College’s Michael Zanetti and Fausto Crapiz, of King University, at mile 51 of Sunday’s race and powered away for the victory in the men’s college A division.

Rhim also placed third in the division’s criterium on Sunday, finishing behind Zanetti and Milligan’s David Duquette.

At the Net Quechee PlanningPickleball Clinic

Quechee — Quechee Club director of tennis Chuck Kinyon will host an exhibition and clinic for the growing sport of pickleball on June 18 on the club’s outdoor tennis courts.

Tournament pickleball player Dan Gal will be on hand to put on a demonstration of the sport, which involves elements of tennis and paddle tennis. The clinic will be staged on Quechee’s two new courts dedicated to pickleball.

With a Stick Field Hockey ClinicIn Windsor

Windsor —Rebekka Dimick and Riley White will hold a one-day field hockey clinic for players in grades K-12 on June 25 at MacLeay-Royce Field.

The clinic will be broken into two sessions, with grades K-6 going from 9 a.m.-noon and grades 7-12 set for 12:30-5 p.m. All players are asked to bring mouth and shin guards, goggles, a stick, appropriate footwear, water and a snack. Some goggles and sticks will be available for borrowing for those players who lack either.

Each session will feature instruction followed by small games, with the emphasis on skills, fun and safety. Players will all receive and get to keep a ball as part of their registration.

The clinic costs $50, and participants are asked to pre-register via email at rdimick@vtc.edu by May 1. The clinic fee will be due upon arrival at the clinic.

Getting Muddy at Oxbow

Bradford, Vt. — The Oxbow High School track and field team will host its first Woods Road Mud Run on April 23, a fundraiser to help the Olympians purchase their first record board for the program.

The run will cover 3.75 miles over a wooded course, with walkers and runners both welcome to participate.

The event begins at 11 a.m., with competitors meeting in the OHS cafeteria in the case of rain or on the OHS track should the weather cooperate.

The cost to join in is $10 for ages 12 and up and $5 for ages 11 and younger, a fee that includes a post-race barbecue lunch along with prizes. As a low-waste event, organizers are asking participants to bring their own plates, forks and water bottles.

Zackathlon Offers Options

South Pomfret — Zack’s Place is calling all runners, riders and those looking for a little exercise to join in the Zackathlon at Suicide Six Ski Area on May 22.

The event will offer multiple options for all ages and abilities. The day begins at 9 a.m. with a 45-mile bike ride through Pomfret, Barnard, Bethel, Sharon, Hartford and Woodstock, along with a biathlon consisting of a 4.5-mile run around, up and over the Suicide Six summit and a 17-mile bike ride.

Those choosing only the 4.5-mile run or 17-mile ride will go at 10 a.m., and a one-mile run up Su Six’s Easy Mile kicks off at 11 a.m.

Everything returns to the ski area, where Zack’s Place personnel will provide a lunch featuring food from local sources.

The costs to participate are $15 for the one-mile run or $45 for the run or either bike ride. The biathlon costs $45 for individuals and $65 for teams.

All registration begins at 8 a.m., and all proceeds benefit Zack’s Place.

Race Around the LakeSet for May 22

Barnard — Five- and 10-kilometer options highlight the third Race Around the Lake, which is scheduled for May 22 at Silver Lake State Park.

The event raises money to help fund BarnArts youth programs. Last year’s race drew 180 runners, and this year’s schedule includes a run or walk option for the 5K or a 10K run, in both cases beginning at Silver Lake. Both routes include elements of scenic paths, wooded single track and back roads with lake views.

Early registration is available at $30 for adults and $15 for children ages 12 and younger. Those who sign up by May 1 will receive a free T-shirt.

The day also includes a complimentary lunch, music, an awards ceremony and a free kids’ race along Silver Lake.

On the Diamond Claremont Ump Clinic

Claremont — The New Hampshire chapter of the American Softball Association and the Claremont men’s modified-pitch softball league will hold a free clinic for prospective umpires on April 30 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Claremont Recreation Department office on South Street.

The clinic will cover umpiring rules and mechanics. New Hampshire ASA and the Claremont league are looking for men and women, regardless of experience, to work games this spring and summer.
