Observations about roadside litter

First, I hope all towns do as good a job at recruiting people to spend a little time picking up roadside litter as Cornish, NH does. During the 2 weeks around Earth Day many bottles, butts and cans have been picked up.

A few observations from my roadside pickups: parents are setting good examples, mostly, for their kids. Few or no wrappers or soda cups from McDonalds or other fast-food chains. That may indicate more interest in healthy food, too, or just that parents canโ€™t afford fast food now.

Healthier habits for adults? Still too many cigarette butts, but all I found were filtered. Better for the lungs, worse for the environment. There are still plenty of beer cans, small vodka bottles. I wish people wouldnโ€™t throw those over the bank so they roll down towards a brook. Someone has to go through the brush  – sometimes with ticks – to get them. Please drop them near the roadside for easier pickup. Or could you please take them home?

Plastic water bottles? They are few and far between. I hope that means more people are carrying water bottles. That will save you money and reduce our plastic consumption.

Many thanks to all of you who just keep a trash bag in the car. Mother Nature and all her plants and critters appreciate it, too.
