Affordability Crisis
On Tuesday, I listened to our President’s State of the Union Speech. Among other things, he spoke of affordability and the positive value of tariffs. The following day I went to Kohl’s in West Lebanon specifically to purchase four white cotton pillowcases. I found them easily, but was surprised that they were not priced. No problem; just pillowcases, I thought.
At the checkout counter, the cashier scanned my purchase. The total for my four cotton pillowcases came to $102.00! I figured this was a mistake so I politely asked her to recheck the barcodes. One set of two was priced at $64. The second set was offered at half price. When I again questioned the pricing, the cashier told me they were labeled Vera Wang and her goods are expensive. Ok, but $25.50 per pillowcase seemed outrageous. I declined the purchase.
Afterward, I tried to reconcile the pillowcase price. Were they affordable? No. Were they affected by tariffs? Probably. Was it a mistake on the part of Kohl’s. Maybe. Is the President really serious about lowering prices. Who knows?
