Here’s an amazing fact: In just 90 minutes, enough sunlight strikes the Earth to provide the entire planet’s energy needs for one whole year (World Economic Forum). Coal was the fuel of the 19th century. Oil and gas were the fuels of the 20th century. Now it’s the 21st century and time to move on. Solar has become the fastest growing and cheapest fuel on the planet.
On Sunday, Sept. 21 hundreds of communities will celebrate the success and the continuing promise of solar and wind energy with a national day of action called Sun Day. As Bill McKibben, the key organizer behind Sun Day, says, “It’s cheap, it’s available in bulk, it’s on the shelf ready to go if we choose to use it.”
Four energy committees will host a Sun Day event starting at 10:30 a.m. on the Ledyard Bridge as the gathering point for a parade to the Norwich Green. Look for the sun and earth sculptures on the bridge! We’ll have signs, and marchers are invited to bring their own.
On the Norwich Green from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., local partners will present a variety of energy activities, demos of solar and electric technologies, and other resources. Attendees can meet state legislators and clean energy advocates, “Ask a Neighbor” how they are transitioning off fossil fuels, and participate in a drawing for donated prizes at 12:30 p.m. TheBox food truck will be there with a menu of tacos and other delicious offerings for snack and lunch.
Parking is available on both sides of Ledyard Bridge at the Boathouse and Lewiston parking lots. All Hanover street parking and the parking garage are free on Sunday. Street parking is available at the Norwich Green.
Organizers for Upper Valley Sun Day are the Energy Committees of Lyme, Norwich and Thetford and Sustainable Hanover.
