VERSHIRE โ€” A special election is scheduled for June 27 to consider new general fund and highway fund budgets, after voters rejected the original proposals in April.

The revised general fund budget is $461,000, down $20,000 from the budget voters rejected in April, 97-73.

The revised highway fund budget is $885,000, which is up about $121,000 from the highway fund budget voters rejected, 100-71.

To arrive at the decreased general fund budget, the Selectboard and treasurer went through it line by line and cut back in small amounts where they could, said Town Clerk Chelsea Parker.

The highway fund increased due to state grants awarded in the time between drafting the first budget and the new one, Parker said. The town must spend a total of $316,000 in order to receive a $308,000 reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, for a project on Reed Road.

Though the revised budgets are still above those voters approved last year, the amount to be raised by taxes is down.

The revised budgets still are up from those voters approved last year, which were $438,000 for the general fund and $578,000 for highway.

The general fund budget calls for approximately $259,000 in taxes from residents, which is a 2.5% decrease from last year, and the highway fund calls for $443,000 in taxes, a 12% decrease from last year.

An informational meeting on the revised budgets will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 25 in the Town Center, located at 27 Vershire Road.

The special election is Saturday, June 27 by Australian ballot also at the Town Center. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
