VERGENNES, Vt. — The Hartford High boys golf team claimed the VPA Division II state championship Tuesday.
Senior captain Jaden Poirier led the Hurricanes in cool, tough conditions at the Basin Harbor Club, which was softened by four inches of rain during the weekend. Poirier shot a 13-over-par 84. Thomas Thorburn added an 87, senior Sean Dunton had an 89 and Matthew Tsouknakis shot a 90 for the Hartford scoring rounds. Senior Zach Johnson shot 101 to round things out.
The Hurricanes produced a team score of 350, 16 shots ahead of second-place Peoples Academy. Otter Valley’s Lucas Politano won the D-II boys individual title with a 4-over 75.
Woodstock took fifth place as a team, led by Owen Kross (86) and Beck Welch (91).
With tee times starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and a two-plus hour drive to Basin Harbor, the Hurricanes stayed overnight in a cottage at the club prior to play. Hartford had previously captured the Southern Vermont League title, the D-II sectionals and the Battenkill Cup, a match play event hosted by the prestigious Dorset Field Club.
“This is an awesome group of kids; they deserve it,” said Hartford coach Erin Stevens. “We came close last year, and this year I asked them all to set individual and team goals, and every single one wrote down the goal to win the state championship. They worked really hard before, during and after practice, being proactive.”
This is the third state title for Hartford golf, adding to crowns in 1994 and 2019. The Canes were in line to host this year’s state championship tournament at the Quechee Club until flooding from July’s heavy rains scuttled those plans. The flood damage also caused Hartford to adapt, practicing at Windsor’s John P. Larkin Country Club and the Woodstock Country Club before Quechee’s Highland Course became fully available after Labor Day.
“This took a lot of community support, and we really appreciate it,” Stevens said.
CANTERBURY, N.H. — The Bears claimed second place in the NHIAA Division I state championship tournament at Canterbury Woods Country Club.
Senior captain Adam Goodney paced Hanover with a 1-under-par 71 to tie for second as an individual. Andrew Cahoon added a 78, Nick Reiss and Andrew Cramer each shot 79 and Joseph DeSimone shot 86 for the Bears. Goodney and Cahoon each qualified to compete in the individual state title event this coming Saturday at Beaver Meadow Golf Club in Concord.
Hanover’s team score of 393 was good for second behind Concord at 383.
“They worked hard all season long and showed up when it mattered most to put Hanover back on the map for New Hampshire D-I golf,” said Hanover coach Josh Flanders.
