Weathersfield police have been investigating the case of a person missing for more than a month, and other than saying that they are following up leads they aren’t releasing much more about the ongoing probe.

Weathersfield Police Chief William Daniels, contacted this week, refused to answer questions about steps the department has taken in tracking down leads in the disappearance of Tonia Bushway.

He said because the investigation is ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment further. In response to an inquiry this week, he directed a reporter to a news release but would not say when it had been released.

Bushway was last seen by a friend July 2, according to the release, looking to get a ride from her residence on Ascutney Road to Springfield, Vt.

“Tonia has not been seen or heard from since,” the release added. “Tonia was believed to be walking to Springfield when she was unable to get a ride.”

The release stated that anyone with information is asked to call the Weathersfield Police Department at 802-674-2185.

Daniels also referred comment on the case to a missing person flyer prepared in the Vermont Intelligence Center. The flyer, which includes a photo of Bushway, described her as a 49-year-old white female with long brown hair; brown eyes; standing approximately 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 120 pounds.

The department posted a brief statement about the case on its Facebook page about the case, reporting Bushway missing and asking the public for any information. That July 23 posting also included two photos of Bushway.

Some commenters on the post questioned the gap in time between when the post was made and when Bushway was last seen.

Daniels, contacted this week, said that people are entitled to their opinions, adding that his department has kept in contact with Bushway’s family about the case.

There are also two GoFundMe pages associated with Bushway’s case, including one seeking to raise $2,500 in reward funds.

“Hello.. we are the family & friends of Tonia Bushway … who has not been seen nor heard from since July 1st. We need to raise funds to offer a reward to help get her home,” that page stated.

“She disappeared on July 1st in Vermont. When family realized she was missing they went to her home and there were squatters living there,” the page added. “Her home was ransacked and the property was trashed. After the family & police showed up at the house, they all scattered leaving a mess that needs to be cleaned up.”

The page stated that after a month there had been no signs of Bushway and her daughters and family and friends were worried.

“Someone knows something,” the page stated, “maybe a reward will bring them out! We will not stop searching until she is found.”

The page added, “There are 2 fundraisers, one is this one for reward money and the other is for expenses the daughters have due to their mom’s house getting destroyed. They need dumpsters for the trash and items to secure and clean the property.

Attempts to reach Bushway’s family members, including through the GoFundMe pages, were not successful.

A Facebook page has also been set up, #Where is Tonia Bushway. According to that page, Bushway was last seen by family when they dropped her off at her home July 1.

“She is not known to normally travel further than locally. She has no resources to be gone this long,” the post stated. “Everyone is worried.”
