HANOVER — Those looking for an introduction to animal tracking in the winter should plan on making their way over to Tunis Brook in Hanover this weekend.
Adair Mulligan, executive director of the Hanover Conservancy, will be leading a one-mile hike from 1–2:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Tunis Brook Mill Lot, located off Goose Pond Road in Hanover.
“It’s a magical little place,” said Mulligan, who became more interested in tracking when she worked for the NH Audubon. “I have always seen moose tracks every time I’ve been out there.”
One of the reasons Mulligan enjoys teaching winter tracking is because it gives people the opportunity to imagine what life is like for the animals that do not hibernate and how they manage to survive the often-harsh Northern New England climate.
“I think we’ll see deer tracks, I think we’ll see coyote, we’ll probably see tracks of snowshoe hare and ruffed grouse and if we’re lucky really little mammals like mice, voles, certainly red squirrel,” Mulligan said.
The hike is best for children ages 8 and up and snowshoes, spikes and hiking poles are recommended.
