HANOVER — Aaryn Rai hit a turnaround hook shot with 0.2 seconds left to cap a game-closing 9-0 run that snapped the Dartmouth men’s basketball team’s 14-game Ivy League losing streak and produced 65-63 win over Columbia at Leede Arena on Saturday night.
Dartmouth (8-14, 1-6) trailed, 63-56, with 6:50 left when the final charge sounded. A free throw and layup from Chris Knight got things started, with Knight adding another layup with 1:55 left to bring the Big Green within 63-61.
Ian Sistare tied the contest with his own layup with 50 seconds remaining. Knight rebounded a 3-point miss from Columbia’s Mike Smith with 21 seconds to go, and Rai (11 points) hit the winning shot on a Wes Slajchert feed to beat the horn.
Knight led Dartmouth with 23 points, including the 1,000th of his career. The Big Green hosts Cornell on Saturday night.
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Junior goaltender Kayla Wormsbecher turned aside 34 shots for her first college shutout and the Dartmouth College women’s hockey team broke a 10-game losing streak and 11-game winless streak with a 2-0 blanking of Union College at Achilles Rink.
Goals from Catherine Trevors and Jennifer Costa gave Wormsbecher all the lead she would need. She saved her best for last, making 16 third-period saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Costa and Trevors both struck for unassisted tallies. Dartmouth outshot the Dutchwomen, 36-34, and will head to Rensselaer on Saturday.
HANOVER — Cam Strong and Daniel Warpecha staked the Big Green (11-9-4, 8-7-2) to a two-goal cushion at the first intermission, and Dartmouth cruised from there to break a five-game ECAC Hockey winless streak.
Tanner Palocsik traded goals with Brown’s Cole Quisenberry in the middle stanza before the Big Green pulled away. Drew O’Connor and Collin Rutherford completed Dartmouth’s ledger. Matt Baker and Will Graber both had two assists, and Adrian Clark needed just 11 saves for the win.
The Big Green hosts Yale on Saturday.
NEW YORK — The Big Green (7-13, 1-6) dropped its sixth straight Ivy League contest, falling into an 18-8 hole after one quarter and unable to fully come back.
After taking control early, the Lions won the game at the free-throw line. Columbia shot 18-for-21 from the stripe on the night compared to Dartmouth’s 4-for-6 response.
Jimena Abejon came off the bench to net a game-high 15 points for the Big Green. Katie Douglas provided 14 points, and Anna Luce and Annie McKenna both produced 10 points.
Dartmouth heads to Cornell on Saturday.
HANCOCK, Mass. — Claire Thomas took the top spot on the podium, winning the women’s giant slalom as the Big Green settled into third place after the first day of the Williams Carnival.
Racing at Jiminy Peak, Thomas led by more than a second after the morning run and ultimately won by more than three seconds with a combined time of 1 minute, 43.77 seconds. Abi Jewett was third and Gwen Wattenmaker fifth to give the women the team win. Drew Duffy’s fourth-place GS finish led the Big Green men.
Nordic competition took place in Lake Placid, N.Y. Without three-time NCAA champ Katharine Ogden for the second straight week, Dartmouth’s top cross country results came from Abby Drach and Cameron Wolfe, who were both 15th in their respective 10K classic races.
Middlebury (447) and Vermont (400) lead the overall standings, follwed by the Big Green (369).
ITHACA, N.Y. — The second-seeded Big Green (9-0) overturned No. 7 Yale to open the ECAC Indoor Championship at Cornell University.
Dartmouth swept to four singles wins after giving up the doubles point. No. 6 Pierce Widdecombe, No. 2 Dan Martin, No. 3 Peter Conklin and No. 5 Anders Gibbons did the honors, all in straight sets.
Dartmouth plays either No. 3 Cornell or No. 6 Brown on Saturday at 3 p.m.
