WINDSOR — The Windsor High boys basketball team picked up a 78-40 win on Monday night over visiting Newport in the season opener for both teams.

The Yellowjackets were led by Owen Abrahamsen’s 22 points. John Cook III added 15 points for Windsor (1-0), thanks to shooting a perfect 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.

“Good team effort, played well in the first half. It’s big to get a lead like we did in the first quarter,” Windsor coach Harry Ladue said. “We got to play a lot of people tonight which let’s us mix and match and see what works.”

Will Cross had 17 of Newport’s 40 points and Sean Moody had seven.

The Yellowjackets visit Thetford on Friday while the Tigers welcome Fall Mountain on Tuesday for their home opener.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Thetford 70, Stowe 28

THETFORD — The Panthers opened up their state title defense with three players scoring in double figures and dominated from the start, talking a 28-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Emma Colby scored a game-high 15 points, and Grace Davis and Emi Vaughan each had 14. Kelsey Smith contributed nine points off the bench for Thetford (1-0).

The Panthers led 38-17 at the half and outscored the visitors 32-11 in the second. Coach Eric Ward said he was happy to see Lily MacVeigh back on the court after she missed the entirety of last season.

Thetford hosts Rivendell on Wednesday.

West Rutland 65, Woodstock 41

WOODSTOCK — After allowing a 15-0 run to start the game, the Wasps cut the deficit to 46-35 at the end of the third quarter but couldn’t finish the deed in the fourth.

Emma Tarelton, who had foul trouble all night, still led Woodstock (0-1) with 13 points. Freshman Norah Harper had eight points off the bench.

The Wasps host Randolph on Wednesday.

COLLEGE HOCKEY Dartmouth sophomore tabbed ECAC Player of the Week

HANOVER — Big Green sophomore Sam Hesler was named the ECAC Hockey Men’s Player of the Week.

This past week he netted his first career goals and recorded his first two multi-point games of his career, against Bentley and at No. 12 Northeastern. His four points tied for the national lead as he netted a goal and an assist in each game.

This is the second time this season that a Big Green forward has led the nation in scoring in a week’s time and been named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week. He joins Drew O’Connor. Dartmouth returns to the ice Dec. 28-29 when it hosts Colorado College and UConn in the 31st Annual Ledyard Classic.

Dartmouth junior named ECAC Goalie of the Week

HANOVER — Junior Kayla Wormsbecher was named the ECAC Goalie of the Week.

She got her first start of the season last Friday when the Big Green closed out 2019 with a 2-1 victory over Franklin Pierce. In the game she had 15 saves, earning her first collegiate win.

The Big Green kick off 2020 when they host Rensselaer on Jan. 3.

BOYS BASKETBALL KUA 84, Proctor 60

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Wildcats closed out their weekend at the Thomas Blackburn Tournament with a win over Proctor thanks to Rob Brown scoring 18 points. It’s the sixth-consecutive game that he’s scored in double figures.

Matt Price scored a team-high 20 points, and Quinn Guth and Andrew Hartel each chipped in 15. KUA (5-1) visit Wilbraham Monson Academy on Wednesday.
