POMFRET — When Pomfret-Teago Fire Chief Jake Astbury got a call from the treasurer’s office about the $5,300 owed to the fire department, he expected it was a scam.
“There was definitely some fact checking going on,” he told Vermont State Treasurer Mike Pieciak on Tuesday.
He said the money likely came from an investment that was made before the town’s two fire departments merged in 2012, and could be used toward upgrading communications equipment that is 25 years old.
Pieciak and two staff members traveled from Montpelier to Brattleboro on Tuesday making three stops to deliver checks to owners of some of the larger returns of the state’s unclaimed property.
