NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Hartford High graduate Ryan McCarthy is now the head football coach at Central Connecticut State University, having had the interim tag removed from his title on Wednesday.

A longtime assistant with several college football programs in the Northeast, McCarthy was elevated to CCSU’s interim head coach in January when previous coach Pete Rossomondo left to become the offensive line coach at Rutgers. McCarthy had served as the Blue Devils’ offensive coordinator the previous four seasons.

The Blue Devils are 5-1 this year with McCarthy at the helm, scoring a 24-14 win at Columbia on Saturday. They made the Stats FCS national rankings, at No. 25, this week for the first time since 2006.

“I look forward to leading this group as we compete for Northeast Conference championships and NCAA playoff berths,” McCarthy said in a news release. “We have shown that we can be successful here, and I look forward to helping CCSU football reach even greater heights.”

A graduate of SUNY-Cortland, McCarthy assisted at Siena and Albany — the latter for 13 years — before moving to CCSU.

McCarthy graduated from Hartford High in 1996, playing quarterback for Mike Stone, now Lebanon High’s athletic director. McCarthy was Vermont’s starting signal caller in the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, a 13-7 loss to New Hampshire at Dartmouth’s Memorial Field.

CCSU hosts Bryant (2-5) in an NEC contest on Saturday.
