BRADFORD, Vt. — The Thetford Academy girls basketball team shook off its first loss in two months in typical fashion, throwing down a strong second half in a 58-37 win over Oxbow at Mona Garone Gym on Thursday night.

The Panthers (17-2) saw a 16-game winning streak come to a end in a defeat against Lake Region on Tuesday but bounced back with authority against the Olympians (7-12). Down 22-21 at the break, TA used a 15-6 third quarter to take a lead, then outscored the O’s, 22-9, in the fourth to pull away.

QUECHEE — Sydney Goodwin hit 10 of 14 free throws to preface perhaps the Eagles’ best night at the charity stripe this season.

Goodwin posted a team-high 20 points in what Mid Vermont Christian coach Chris Goodwin called “her best game of the year.” The offense — along with 13 points from Kyla McCoy and eight from Hayley Goodwin — helped the Eagles (14-5) hold off a late challenge from the upset-minded Raptors (4-14).

“As long as we have one girl with 20 points and a couple of others with 10, we’re usually good,” Chris Goodwin said.

MVCS closes its regular season by hosting White River Valley on Friday night.

Adele Tilden and Jenna Gilbert led Rivendell with eight points apiece, followed by seven from Emily Hebb. Done with the regular season, the Raptors await their VPA Division IV tournament seeding on Monday.

Tarleton ultimately hit a trio of trifectas on a 12-point night to lead Woodstock.

“We shot probably 20 good shots in the first half and literally rimmed 10 of them in and out,” Woodstock coach Jason Johnson said. “Finally, in the third quarter, we hit a 3 and they started to go.”

Natalie Stevens scored nine points, including one 3-pointer, for the Wasps, who await their VPA Division II tournament assignment on Monday.

The Marauders can still lock down the fourth seed in states with a tie or win against Bishop Brady on Saturday night.
