Local Roundup: Royals Outlast Berlin in Double OT

West Canaan — Mascoma High girls basketball coach Walt Hammond could feel a victory coming. The Royals had been getting closer to producing a full 32-minute effort in recent contests.

If that wasn’t going to be enough, apparently going 40 minutes did the trick.

With Nicole Williams providing key play at point guard and full-court pressure defense finally taking its toll, the Royals broke a five-game losing streak with a 42-37 double-overtime win over Berlin on Friday night at Mascoma Valley Regional High School. Hammond called the win “an upset” given the quality of the opposition, but the effort involved got the job done.

“We’ve been creeping up to it the last three of four games; the girls have been getting closer and closer,” Hammond said. “I told them it’s coming; they just have to play 32 hard minutes. We’ve done it a couple of times before things fell apart. But we pushed through, especially in overtime.”

Mascoma (3-6, 3-8) nearly won the contest in regulation on a pair of late Williams free throws, but Berlin answered in similar fashion to send the game to overtime. Emily Moulton stepped off the bench in the first overtime with a key free throw that extended affairs for another four minutes.

That’s when Mascoma’s press took hold. Bella Kondi, Lizz Pelton and Jordan Henry hit baskets in the second overtime, Moulton and Williams added free throws and the Royals had their victory.

“Playing full-court man-to-man is a lot of work, and we finally wore them down,” Hammond said. “That’s a solid win against a good basketball team.”

Pelton topped the Mascoma scorebook with 11 points, followed by 10 from Williams, who capably handled the point when Michaela Dowd hit foul trouble in the third quarter. Henry and Kondi both closed the night with six points for the hosts.

Mascoma heads to Conant for another test on Tuesday.

Hartford 46, Mill River 42

North Clarendon, Vt. — The eighth time’s the charm: The Hurricanes (1-7) finally broke into the win column for first-year coach Heidi Bushway, as Jasmine Jenkins notched a career-high 17 points to compensate for Mill River’s defensive attention on leading Hartford scorer Kennedy Mullen.

Hartford’s pressing defense netted a 32-25 halftime lead; the Minutemen responded with a box-and-one on Mullen (15 points) in the second half, slowing her down but opening the door for Jenkins’ heroics. The sophomore went 5-for-5 at the line in the second half to lock down Bushway’s first varsity coaching win.

“It feels great,” Bushway said. “The team just stepped up.”

Hartford visits Springfield on Tuesday.

Woodsville 40Colebrook 39

Woodsville — Emily Prest hit the game-winning basket with 1:26 to play and Olivia Sarkis grabbed three late rebounds to preserve the Engineers’ victory over the Mohawks.

Sarkis threw down a double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds for Woodsville (7-1), which retained a top-four spot in the NHIAA Division IV standings with the victory. Prest added 11 points for the Engineers, who had to pull out the win despite losing sophomore Morgan Wagstaff to a injury in the third quarter. Colebrook followed Wagstaff’s departure with a 9-0 run for a 32-32 tie, setting up the nail-biter finish.

The Engineers visit Rivendell this afternoon.

Lebanon 68, Bishop Brady 58

Lebanon — With two key players out of action, the Raiders got important performances from role players and another dominant effort from Rebecca Wright to edge the visiting Green Giants.

The Raiders held a narrow lead, 37-36, through three quarters before closing out the win with 21 points in the fourth. Carrie Laramie scored five of her nine points and Catherine Cole four of her seven in the fourth. Coach Tim Kehoe praised each for stepping up into bigger roles while the team plays, for now, without Megan Gradijan and Sally Rainey (injuries).

“We don’t win if some of the younger kids don’t step up and keep their poise in the fourth quarter,” Kehoe said. “(Bishop Brady) hit some big shots, especially in the third quarter, but every time they did that, we responded.”

Wright played another in a long string of strong games to lead the Raiders, scoring 31 points while pulling down 14 rebounds to go with seven blocks. “Becky played like Becky; she was great tonight,” Kehoe said.

Anna Wolke added 12 points for Lebanon (10-0 overall, 7-0 league), which plays at Kearsarge on Monday.

Hanover 78, Oyster River 17

Durham, n.h. — Five players scored nine points or more and the Marauders built a 49-8 lead at halftime to beat the Bobcats.

“The second quarter was our best quarter of the year. We had really great ball movement,” Hanover coach Dan O’Rourke said.

Lois Schwarz made three 3-pointers and had 15 points to lead the Marauders. Julia Golder added 14 points. Maddie McCorkle had 12, Diana Schwarz had 11 and Melissa Whitmore chipped in nine points.

Hanover (9-2 overall, 8-1 league) hosts John Stark on Friday night.

Bow 43, Stevens 30

Bow, n.h. — The Falcons held the Cardinals (1-8, 2-10) to just three first-quarter points and never trailed the rest of the way.

Sydney Miller returned to the Stevens lineup after a game off and finished with a team-high eight points. Senior Carrie Faro contributed five.

Stevens will try to break an eight-game losing streak in NHIAA play when Newport visits on Tuesday.

Springfield, Vt. — The Wasps (3-5) dropped their third straight game and will visit Hartford next Friday.

Chester, Vt. — The Chieftains earned a season series split with the Yellowjackets (6-3). Windsor hosts Brattleboro on Monday.

Sunapee 81, Nute 20

Milton, n.h. — The Lakers (6-0, 7-1) amassed a 33-point second quarter to make their trip to eastern New Hampshire academic.

Kevin Nolan sank a pair of 3-pointers en route to a game-high 19 points for Sunapee. Harper Flint scored six points in the big second stanza and finished the night with 10. Sean Moynihan had eight points, Blaise O’Mara had seven and everyone who saw time for Sunapee contributed at least two points.

The NHIAA Division IV leaders entertain Newmarket on Tuesday night.

Woodstock 55White River Valley 44

Woodstock — The Wasps (4-4) used a 21-8 run in the second quarter to pull away from the Wildcats (5-2).

Harrison Morse had a game-high 18 points to pace Woodstock. Gabe Marsicovetere had 15 points. Charlie Amato had nine points, and Emilio Montano had eight. Woodstock led, 31-19, at halftime.

Eddie Bray (nine points) and Troy Walker (eight) led WRVS, which plays at Thetford on Monday.

The Wasps are off until Friday when they host Montpelier.

Woodsville 52Colebrook 50

Woodsville — The Engineers (4-3) rallied from five points down with two minutes to play to stun the Mohawks.

Corey Bemis put Woodsville in front, 51-50, on a layup with 30 seconds to go. The Engineers then forced a turnover on Colebrook’s ensuing possession before Conner Maccini made one of two free throws in the final seconds to provide the final margin.

Billy Green led the Engineers with 12 points, and Patrick Estes had 11. Bemis and Brendan Walker each added nine points. Woodsville visits Newmarket on Friday.

Sharon 52, Northfield 22

Sharon — The Phoenix (4-4) earned a measure of revenge following an early-season loss to the Marauders.

“It was a great overall team effort,” Sharon coach Blake Fabrikant said. “I feel like we finally clicked. We’ve had a lot of potential, and we’ve had a couple tough games. This was a positive sign of things to come.”

Fisher Kelley had 18 points to lead the hosts. Tyler Chapin added 14 and Taylor Leonard had 13 points. Sharon led, 28-10, at halftime.

The Phoenix host White River Valley on Friday.

Oyster River 67, Hanover 44

Hanover — The Marauders (6-3 overall, 5-2 league) suffered a cold shooting night in a loss to the Bobcats.

Hanover shot just 17 percent from 3-point territory and trailed 20-9 after the first quarter. Charlie Adams (12 points) and Liam Collins (eight) led the Marauders.

“We’re getting a lot of looks, just can’t seem to knock them down in big games,” Hanover coach Tim Winslow said.

The Marauders visit John Stark on Friday.

Montpelier 83, Oxbow 58

Montpelier — The Olympians (6-1) were undone by the Montpelier press in the decisive second quarter.

The Solons led, 21-15, after the first quarter and then scored 32 points in the second quarter to lead by a bunch at halftime.

“They pressed us and we didn’t handle it well, especially in the second quarter. We had lots of turnovers, which led to lots of easy points for them,” Oxbow coach Steven Carson said.

Sophomore Bryce Ilsley continues to impress, leading the Olympians with 32 points. Matt Emerson added 12 points. Oxbow plays host to Randolph on Wednesday.

Bishop Brady 53, Lebanon 47

Concord — Ismael Rivera buried a 3-pointer in every quarter for a team-high 18 points for the Green Giants (3-4).

The hosts used a 17-7 third quarter to gain the upper hand of what had been a close contest. The Raiders had a rough shooting period and lost the battle of the boards, enabling Brady to take control.

Wade Rainey had a season-high 22 points and Jon Willeman added 16 for the Raiders (3-2, 5-3), who host Kearsarge on Monday night.

West Rutland 63, MVCS 40

West Rutland, Vt. — The Golden Horde used a 24-6 run in the second quarter to bet the Eagles (1-9).

Josh King had 13 points for MVCS. Daniel Roberts added 11 and Dylan Patel had seven points.

The Eagles will host Northfield on Thursday.

Berlin 72, Mascoma 51

Berlin, n.h. — Seth Balderama poured in 32 points and Sincere Davis contributed 16 for the Mountaineers, who build a 36-18 halftime lead on the visiting Royals (3-5, 4-6).

“(Balderama) was definitely very good, and Sincere Davis had a very good game,” Mascoma coach Jim Barry said. “They were playing harder and better than we did. We have to find our identity. We just have to play together and tougher.”

Dakota Decocq paced the visitors with 18 points. Liam Hemmerling finished with a season-high 10 for the Royals, who entertain Fall Mountain on Tuesday.

Lyndon 51, Hartford 28

White River Junction — The Hurricanes (0-8) matched their season-low in scoring in a home loss to the Vikings.

Dylan Young led the way for Lyndon with 14 points. Dane Buckingham added 13, and 6-foot-7 Vuk Vukicevic netted nine, as did teammate Sheldon Sanborn. Nick Porter’s five points topped the ledger for Hartford.

The Canes visit Otter Valley on Tuesday.

Bow 79, Stevens 32

Claremont — The Cardinals led, 14-11, after the first quarter before the Falcons asserted control.

Owen Taylor had 12 points for Stevens. Derrick Stanhope added eight. The Cardinals (0-7) will visit Newport on Tuesday.

Meriden — Zach Whitehead had a hat trick and an assist to lead KUA (13-3).

Tomas Mazura had a goal and five assists. Drew Bennett, Sullivan Mack and Teddy Griffin each added a goal and an assist. Brian Carrabes had a goal and two assists. Arlo Merritt and Seth Stadheim had one goal each.

Lebanon Girls SecondIn Gunstock Race

Gilford, n.h. — With Cassidy Adams recording a pair of top-five times, the Lebanon High girls claimed second as a team in an NHIAA Division III slalom and giant slalom race at Gunstock.

Adams and teammate Jessie Hastings got the Raiders going with a 4-5 finish in the two-run GS, Adams posting a two-run time of 1:01.77 with Hastings right behind in 1:01.99. Baylee Chase (17th) and Ayla Pearson (19th) completed Lebanon’s scoring.

Adams followed that by placing fifth in the slalom with a two-run time of 1:19.09. Hastings (13th), Chase (18th) and Ellie Mooney (29th) added top-30 finishes for the Raiders.

Lebanon’s boys were sixth in their 12-school competition. Graham Ten Haken too fifth in both races for the Raiders, completing the GS in 1:01.98 and the slalom in 1:19.57. John Moorhead added a seventh place in the giant slalom and an eighth place in the slalom for Lebanon.
