Kapalua, Hawaii — Xander Schauffele tied the Plantation course record with an 11-under 62 on Sunday, and he needed every shot to beat Gary Woodland by one shot and win the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Schauffele started the final round five shots out of the lead and opened with a bogey. He ran off three straight birdies. He chipped in for eagle at the turn. He holed a 107-yard wedge for eagle at No. 12. Tied with Woodland over the closing holes, Schauffele finished birdie-birdie to tie the course record last set four years ago.

Woodland, who holed a 12-foot birdie putt at No. 17 to tie for the lead, had a chance to force a playoff but missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the last hole. He closed with a 68.

Rooney Charged With Public Intoxication

Washington — Soccer star Wayne Rooney was arrested last month on a public intoxication charge and taken to jail to sober up after he triggered a door alarm at a Washington-area airport, authorities said on Sunday.

Rooney was arrested on Dec. 16 by police at Dulles International Airport in Virginia after he caused the alarm to go off at an international arrivals gate, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. Authorities said he didn’t breach airport security.

Rooney, who plays for D.C. United, had been traveling abroad in the days prior to his arrest, according to his social media posts.

The airport authority said he was charged with misdemeanor public intoxication and taken to a county jail in the Virginia suburbs of the nation’s capital “to be held until sober.” The statement didn’t include further details on his arrest.

The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office said Rooney, 33, was later released on his own recognizance. A mugshot from his booking shows Rooney in what appeared to be an orange jail jumpsuit.

Indians Get Catching Help

Cleveland — The Cleveland Indians have acquired catcher Kevin Plawecki in a trade with the New York Mets.

The three-time defending AL champions sent right-hander Walker Lockett and infielder Sam Haggerty to New York in exchange for Plawecki, who played in 78 games — 64 starts — for the Mets last season. Plawecki batted .201 with seven homers and a career-high 30 RBIs.

The Indians were in the market for a catcher after trading All-Star Yan Gomes to the Washington Nationals in December. Plawecki will likely platoon with Roberto Perez.

Hirscher Adds Another Win

Zagreb, Croatia — Marcel Hirscher won the first men’s World Cup slalom of 2019 on Sunday for his 30th career victory in the discipline.

The seven-time overall champion trailed Austrian teammate Marco Schwarz after the opening leg but posted the fastest time in the final run before Schwarz straddled a gate and failed to finish.

Alexis Pinturault of France was 0.60 behind in second, and Manuel Feller of Austria was another 0.02 further behind in third.

Hirscher’s main rival in the slalom World Cup, Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway, finished in fifth place.

It was Hirscher’s 64th career win in all events. Only Ingemar Stenmark (40) and Alberto Tomba (35) have won more slalom races.

Sydney Set for Team Event

Sydney — Sydney is set to host the finals of the inaugural ATP Cup men’s team competition next January in an overhaul of the Australian swing for men’s tennis ahead of the season-opening Grand Slam tournament.

Sydney, Brisbane and one other Australian city will co-host the tournament, featuring 24 national teams in three groups of eight and is expected to involve more than 100 players from the men’s tour.

The Australian Open starts in mid-January in Melbourne and has recently been preceded by tournaments across the country in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart and in Auckland, New Zealand.

“We want to build on the great tennis we have in Australia,” Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley said. “The timing is right for expansion. We want more players rewarded, more opportunities for them, more opportunities for fans to get to see them . more global exposure for the sport.”
