In the interest of bringing more people to Chelsea, a group of artists is holding a quiet opening this weekend of a new gallery.
North Common Arts, at 3 Church St., in Chelsea, will hold a reception for a show of work by members of the Chelsea Arts Collective on Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If those hours suggest more of an open house than a reception, that’s by design. Inspired by recent events they’ve organized in the shire town of Orange County, a group of a dozen or so artists has decided to create a clubhouse where they can show their work and hold events, but also to promote civic engagement. Members are planning a monthly calendar that would include art shows, music and dinners with guest chefs, as well as art and craft workshops.

Also on view on the First Branch of the White River this weekend is an exhibition of photographs by South Royalton photographer Marianne Benoir at Tunbridge Public Library. The show is on view now and a reception is planned for 2 to 4 on Sunday afternoon. On view through Jan. 7.
“Branching Out,” an exhibition of watercolor paintings by Amy Hook-Therrien, a Randolph native now living in Windsor, opens Friday at the White River Craft Center in Randolph with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday. The show is on view through Feb. 8.
If you visit any of the above White River Valley venues, stop by South Royalton’s White River Gallery, in the cozy headquarters of BALE (that’s Building a Local Economy). “Graphite Insomnia,” a set of drawings in graphite by Gerald Auten, is on view through Dec. 16. Auten, who teaches in the Studio Art department at Dartmouth College, produces dark, precise yet smoky works on paper.
“Barns & Backyard Discoveries,” an exhibition of drawings by Priscilla Eliades and photographs by Evelyn Swett and Shiela Swett, opens today with a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Osher@Dartmouth offices in Hanover. The show is on view through Dec. 20.
The Library Arts Center in Newport, N.H., opens its annual Gallery of Gifts, a holiday show of fine art and craft, with a reception from 5 to 7 on Friday evening.
Closing
On view through Friday in AVA Gallery and Art Center’s new Members’ Gallery is the second annual installment of ‘10”x10” for $100.’ The nonprofit Lebanon arts center gave 10-inch-square panels to 78 artists who have created 123 works. The panels will be sold at a closing party Friday, from 3 to 7 p.m., and the proceeds benefit AVA.
Also closing Friday at AVA are four solo shows: “Relief,” prints by Hartland artist Rachel Gross; “Color — flow and form,” works on paper by Henniker, N.H., artist Wendy Briggs Powell; “Parallels,” recent work by Lyme sculptor Stina Kohnke; and “As time goes by…,” ceramics by Bulgarian artist Boyan Moskov.

Hall Art Foundation, Reading, Vt. “Made in Vermont” features work by six Vermont artists, including Upper Valley painter Patrick Dunfey.
