Canaan — Police say five people were injured in a four-car crash on Route 4 in Canaan on Sunday afternoon.

Canaan Police Chief Sam Frank said all five were brought to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon after the collision, which closed Route 4 for roughly an hour.

Frank was unsure of their condition, but said at the scene most were expected to be OK.

The crash was triggered when a pickup truck driving westbound slowed and readied to take a left turn onto Potato Road, Frank said.

As the pickup slowed, a vehicle following behind reacted too late and swerved left, hitting another vehicle in the eastbound land head-on, he said.

That collision was then compounded when another vehicle in the eastbound lane struck the one it was following, Frank said.

In total, seven people were involved in the accident, including one teenager, the police chief said.
