Claremont — Animals suffering from smoke inhalation in a fire will have a better chance of survival now after a Connecticut company donated three, pet oxygen mask kits to the city’s fire department.

The City Council voted this week to accept the donation.

Fire Chief Rick Bergeron said the kits come with three different size masks that can be adjusted to fit a variety of snout sizes from very small breeds to large dogs. The mask can also be used on cats and possibly other small mammals.

The conical shaped plastic mask can be attached to a bag that is squeezed to push air into the animal or it can be hooked to a hose that runs to an oxygen tank, according to the chief.

Bergeron said the department has had situations with smoke inhalation of animals and began looking for what sort of equipment was available on the suggestion of Lt. Mike Zombeck. They eventually came upon the Canine Company, which donated the kits.

“It doesn’t happen much but it has happened,” Bergeron said about the need to give an animal oxygen.
