The circumstances of why Dakota Derego appeared before the council and surrendered his certification on June 27 aren’t clear, according to the minutes of the meeting.
Derego was hired in April 2015 after graduating from New Hampshire’s police academy.
Lebanon Police Chief Richard Mello confirmed that Derego is no longer on the force, but declined to comment on the situation, calling it a “personnel matter.”
According to the minutes, Derego and the council met in a nonpublic session in June in Concord and emerged 12 minutes later. The council voted to seal the minutes and made a motion to “accept surrender of officer’s certification for a minimum of two years and that his name is placed in the National Registry.”
The council made a unanimous motion to accept Derego’s action.
A message left for Police Standards and Training Council Director Donald Vittum about what the “National Registry” is wasn’t returned.
Mello said he doesn’t know what that registry is, nor whether it is public or nonpublic.
