Rutland — The Hartford High golf team survived a long, wet day at Rutland Country Club to earn the fifth and final state championship spot at Tuesday’s Vermont Division II qualifying tournament.

Freshman Brady Hathorn led Hartford, shooting a 5-over-par 40 on the front nine and on his way to a team-best 20-over round of 90. Hartford shot a team score of 440 to finish well off the lead but was still good enough to earn a spot in the Vermont state tournament at Vermont National Country Club on June 7.

“It wasn’t our best day, and the conditions were terrible, but we qualified. We’re a young team, and the kids are starting to really enjoy golf and are working hard at it,” Hartford coach Mike Hathorn said.

The Canes’ Ben Healy had a tough first and 18th holes but held it together in between to shoot 114. Kody Wessel had a 115 and Jack Heller shot a 121.

Montpelier’s Bryson Richards won medalist honors with a round of 73; he was the only player in the field to break 80.

Woodstock’s Alex Hirak competed as an individual and shot a 117.

None of the Hartford players have ever played Vermont National, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course in South Burlington. The Canes will now go about setting up a practice round before next week’s state finals.
