Claremont, N.H. — Alice P. Sprague of Lewis Place in Claremont passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, after a brief period of declining health. She was born Alice Jean Palmer on June 28, 1930, to Frank W. Palmer and Clara (Robertson) Palmer in Bristol, Conn.; she was a 1948 graduate of Bristol High School. She had been a resident of Claremont since 1966.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles in 2001, and her older brother Frank Edward in 2006.

She is survived by her children: Elizabeth Sprague of Nashville, Tenn., Frank and his wife, Heidi of Claremont, Nancy Devenger and her husband, Brian of Lebanon, N.H., Carolyn Sprague of Bow, N.H., Samuel and his wife, Darlene of Unity, N.H. and Daniel of Claremont.

She is also survived by grandchildren: Andrea McMahon, Steven Sprague, Jay Devenger, Harrison Sprague, Charles (Mitchell) Sprague, Katharine Sprague, Frank (Will) Sprague Jr. and Emalee Sprague. Also great-grandchildren: Caidence Verill and Caelyn McMahon

Alice was an individual who believed in the importance of investing time and effort into her community. She was a long time volunteer for Women’s Supportive Services that later became Turning Points Network. In her younger years Alice was active in the League of Women Voters and an advocate for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment during the 1960’s and 70’s

Alice was probably most familiar as a fixture at the Hitchin’ Post Restaurant in Claremont, where for decades she worked with various members of the Sprague family as they took respective turns at ownership.

There will be a celebration of Alice’s life in early summer. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Turning Points Network and Lake Sunapee Region VNA and Hospice.
