Coral Gables, Fla. — Right-hander Beau Sulser twirled seven shutout innings while striking out 10, and the Dartmouth College baseball team made a first-ininng run stand up as the Big Green defeated the 17th-ranked Miami Hurricanes, , 1-0, on Friday night.

Sulser (2-0) was in command throughout the night as just four Miami hitters reached base over his seven stanzas on two hits, a walk and a fielding error, only one of which advanced past first base. The senior from Santa Ysabel, Calif., needed just 95 pitches to get his 21 outs before yielding way to classmate Chris Burkholder, who threw two perfect innings for his second save of the young season.

Dartmouth (3-1) got the only run of the night on the first two pitches of the game. Freshman Trevor Johnson ripped a lead-off double on the first offering from Jesse Lepore (1-2), and sophomore Matt Feinstein followed by taking a hack at the first pitch, dropping a two-bagger just out of the reach of the right fielder that allowed Johnson to race home, despite hesitating coming around third.

Dartmouth and Miami (3-1) return to action tonight.

Men’s Hockey

Yale 6, Dartmouth 1

New Haven, Conn. — Dartmouth (10-17-3) dropped Game 1 of its ECAC Hockey first round series with ninth-seeded Yale (12-13-5) at Ingalls Rink.

The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 this season against their Hanover counterparts.

Game 2 will be tonight at 7.

“We have to clean up a few things,” Dartmouth coach Bob Gaudet said in a news release. “There were chances there for us, we just couldn’t finish.

“I have faith in this team that we are going to come back (to)night and play a tough game,” Gaudet added. “This is a series that you have to win two games to move on, and they’ve only won once so we’re going to make it tough on them to get the second.”

Joe Snively and Mike Doherty put the Bulldogs up 2-0 with goals midway through the first and second periods, respectively. Dartmouth junior Corey Kalk notched his 11th of the season and fifth in the last three games with a tally at the 17:06 mark of the second to pull the visitors to within 2-1.

But Yale’s Anthony Walsh and Chris Izmirlian followed with Yale goals in the next two minutes to balloon the lead back to three. John Hayden and Mitchell Smith added the insurance markers in the third.

Yale goalie Sam Tucker stopped 24 shots, while Dartmouth’s Devin Buffalo made 26.

Men’s Basketball

Dartmouth 76, Penn 74

Philadelphia — Guilien Smith drove for a bucket and made two free throws in the final minute to give Dartmouth a victory over Penn.

Both teams are still alive in the race for the fourth and final berth into the inaugural Ivy League tournament with a game remaining. Dartmouth (7-19, 4-9) plays at regular-season champion Princeton tonight, while Penn (12-14, 5-8) is host to No. 2 seed Harvard.

Dartmouth needs to defeat Princeton — a winner of 16 straight games — while Harvard needs to defeat Penn and Yale must beat Columbia for the Big Green to sneak into the tourney.

Smith drove down the right side to score with 52 seconds left and then hit both ends of a one-and-one with 23 seconds remaining. Ryan Betley scored for the Quakers and Dartmouth turned the ball over on the inbounds pass with 12.1 seconds left to give Penn a final chance but Darnell Foreman missed a 10-footer.

Evan Boudreaux scored 16 points with 12 rebounds for Dartmouth with Smith adding 14 points and Miles Wright 13.

Matt Howard and Betley scored 19 points each for Penn. Foreman added 11.

Women’s Basketball

Penn 60, Dartmouth 47

Hanover — Michelle Nwokedi had 22 points and 12 rebounds as Ivy League-leading Penn (18-7, 11-1) defeated Dartmouth (7-19, 2-11).

Dartmouth junior Olivia Smith set a season high with 18 points. Senior teammate Fanni Szabo added in 11 points.

Dartmouth’s season ends tonight against Princeton.

Big Green in Tourney

Hanover — Two Dartmouth women won at the College Squash Association Individual Championship at Berry Squash Courts

In the Ramsay Division, senior Jacqueline Barnes defeated Middlebury’s Alexa Comai 3-1, in the Big Green’s first victory of the afternoon. She will advance to today’s next round.

Dartmouth’s other victory came from Annie Blasberg who defeated Drexel’s Fiona Power in straight games.
