Fairlee Town Meeting will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7, at the Samuel Morey Elementary School Gymnasium to act on 11 articles.

The road, which was built more than 70 years ago, has experienced drainage issues for years and, according to Selectboard Chairman Peter Berger, has a “tendency to heave and slump.”
The town is receiving a grant for $175,000 from the Vermont Agency of Transportation for repairs, and the Selectboard is asking voters to approve a matching portion of $125,000, which includes additional funds for repair work, Berger said. The job entails rebuilding the road’s base and subbase of the road, and inserting the synthetic material Geogrid, which is commonly used to reinforce a sub-base. Geogrid obviates the need for repairs every three to four years, increasing the time frame for repairs to 15 years, or more.
The estimated figures to be raised by taxes for the 2017-2018 fiscal year are $880,229 for the town budget, and $184,997 for the highway budget, Berger said. The total municipal taxes to be raised, including water bond and dam payments, are $1.1 million
Last year’s total municipal tax rate per $100 of valuation was 53.5 cents per $100 of valuation. That has been reduced by a half-penny in the proposed budget, Berger said. The final figures won’t be determined until the completion of the grand list assessment, at the end of July, Berger said.
Berger attributed this reduction to better planning by both the Selectboard and Town Administrator Brian Hanson, who has, Berger said, “been paying attention to the costs and budgeting.”
The Selectboard is also asking voters to consider appropriating funds for 24 different regional organizations, including $36,149 to Upper Valley Ambulance for emergency services, $5,000 to the Lake Fairlee Association milfoil eradication program and $5,500 to the Visiting Nurse service alliance of VT and NH/Hospice of the Upper Valley. The total figure for the appropriations for the 24 organizations is $61,899.
Town offices are nominated and voted from the floor. Selectboard member Catherine McGrath plans to run again for a three-year term.
Lisa Hinson, who was appointed as acting treasurer in October, 2016 after treasurer Melissa Gahagan resigned, will run for a three-year term as treasurer.
Larry Martin will stand again for a three-year term as an auditor.
On the school side, the 2017 annual Rivendell Interstate School District Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. in the Rivendell Academy gym.
