Registered dietician Melanie Loschiavo will teach a free cooking course tonight and Feb. 22 at Oxbow High School in Bradford.

The monthly Cooking Fresh! course, supported by Hannaford and the Upper Valley Community Health Team of the Vermont Blueprint for Health, offers participants the chance to prepare and eat several seasonal recipes.

Januaryโ€™s recipes include: red rice salad with pecans, fennel and herbs; crunchy turnip, apple and Brussels sprout slaw; veggistrone soup; glazed carrot coins and spinach and feta quiche with a sweet potato crust.

The class is open to anyone looking to broaden their cooking skills and expose their taste buds to new things.

Let Them Eat Soup

More than a dozen hot, homemade soups, accompanied by bread, dessert, cider and coffee, will be available at the Meetinghouse at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Upper Valley on Route 5 in Norwich on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

The cost is $10 at the door for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Lessons in Food

Personal chef Ali Price will lead a course in making vegetarian soups at the Open Door Studio on North Main Street in White River Junction on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon. Price will lead participants in the preparation of a vegetarian soup stock from scratch and two more soups. Participants will go home with recipes, broth and soup samples in containers brought from home.

Kathy Maieli, of Vagabond Vintner, will hold a wine blending workshop in Hanover on Feb. 10 and 11. She will teach participants about wine blends from Bordeaux, Cotes du Rhone and California, and how to make their own custom blend. The workshop, including tastings, food, materials and equipment, costs $75 per person or $125 per couple or pair working together.

Emmy-winner and cookbook author Raghavan Iyer will share recipes from his latest book, Smashed, Mashed, Boiled and Baked โ€” and Fried, Too! in a baking demonstration and book signing at King Arthur Flour in Norwich on Feb. 17. The demonstration, which will include samples, will cover potato leek pie with roasted jalapeno sauce, Moroccan potato stew with saffron biscuits and chocolate sweet potato pound cake.

Representatives from Vermont state agencies will offer a Brewery Day to help new and expanding breweries avoid common compliance issues on Feb. 23 at Langevin House at Vermont Technical College in Randolph.

Tunbridgeโ€™s Brocklebank Craft Brewing will host a brew-ski adventure at the Strafford Nordic Center on Feb. 4. For $10, plus a trail fee, participants over 21 can participate in tastings along the trail and in the lodge. Theyโ€™ll also get a pint glass to take home. Recovery Assistance

Those struggling with food addictions are invited to participate in a 12-step recovery group that meets every Wednesday, including tonight, in Hanover.

Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous is geared toward those suffering from food obsession, overeating, under-eating or bulimia.

Meetings take place at the Hanover Friends meetinghouse, next to Hanover High School, at 6:30 p.m.
