Lebanon — Police are investigating whether a Renihan Meadows condominium was used to manufacture illlicit drugs, after an early morning welfare check on Sunday turned up a possible methamphetamine lab.

Two people found at the residence on Sunday were charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, said Lt. Rich Smolenski, adding that more charges could be forthcoming.

Police had not identified the two individuals as of Sunday night.

Lebanon officers encountered the suspected drug lab and other items associated with narcotics trafficking while responding to a welfare check early Sunday morning, Smolenski said.

Police officers in New London called their Lebanon counterparts around 4 a.m. with concerns that two people who possibly had been using drugs in a motel that town could be in Lebanon and at risk of an overdose.

Police responded to 125 Renihan Meadows a short time later and tried to make contact with the people inside, Smolenski said, but were unsuccessful. They obtained a search warrant and entered the building around 6:25 a.m., according to a media release.

Inside, they found a man hiding under a stairway. He was taken into custody and is facing an additional charge of violating a domestic protective order.

Officers also saw evidence of a lab used to make methamphetamine, police said.

Both the Lebanon Fire Department and Drug Enforcement Agency’s Clandestine Lab Team were called to the scene, Smolenski said.

Both groups decided against evacuating neighbors.

“They had some concerns but didn’t see anything that was obviously a hazard,” Smolenski said, adding that he doesn’t think the building will need a full hazmat cleanup.

He said police are working now to determine whether the evidence obtained during the search could support additional charges.

Police are expected to release the names of those charged this morning.
