Londonderry, n.h. — Charlie Adams scored his first varsity goal in his first varsity game as Hanover High boys soccer team used a strong second half for a season-opening 2-0 win over Londonderry on Thursday, toppling the foe that knocked Hanover from the NHIAA Division I postseason a year ago.

Sam Pych volleyed home a second-half corner kick from Henry Kahl to break open the scoreless match. Twenty minutes later, Adams took a through ball from Kahl to add some late-game insurance. Hanover outshot the Lancers, 12-1, in the second half.

Hanover goalkeeper Pat Logan made three saves in the shutout victory, including a diving stop in the first half to keep the game knotted. Londonderry goalkeeper Cam Wheeler made five saves in the loss.

With center back Carter Adams preventing Bow — who went 15-1 last year and was top-seeded in the D-III state tourney — from getting off a shot in the penalty area, Lebanon goalkeepers Davis Cole and Chris Nulty combined on the shutout. “It’s a terrific way to start the season,” Newport coach Jon Hamel said. “We have a really tough schedule. We weren’t able to get any jamborees or scrimmages, so it was kind of our first time on the field playing anybody. It was a gutsy effort.”
