Burlington — A federal grand jury has indicted a Springfield, Vt.-area resident in connection with two bank robberies, one in Brattleboro, Vt., and one in Ludlow, Vt., according to a U.S. Department of Justice news release.

Matthew Martin, 31, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday in Brattleboro federal court to two counts of armed bank robbery, prosecutor Kunal Pasricha said Thursday.

Prosecutors allege Martin robbed the People’s United Bank in Brattleboro on Dec. 14 and robbed the Heritage Family Credit Union in Ludlow a week later, according to the release.

Martin allegedly flashed a BB gun in both robberies.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison for each count.

He will next appear in federal court on Sept. 12. He is being held pending the outcome of his case, Pasricha said.

Martin also has court cases pending in Windsor County. Pasricha said his office continues to investigate other charges that may proceed federally.
