Kingston, r.i. — Freshman Tracey Mills scored her first collegiate goal in the first minute of overtime to life the Dartmouth College women’s soccer team post Rhode Island, 1-0, to give the Big Green a sweep of its season-opening weekend.

Mariel Gordon backed up Mills’ timely strike by recording her second straight shutout for Dartmouth (2-0-0). Gordon finished with five saves.

The Big Green owned a 15-7 edge in shot attempts on the afternoon, but it took Mills’ attempt to finally break the deadlock.

“We dealt with some adversity in this game, going scoreless in regulation and playing a hard-working URI team,” Dartmouth coach Ron Rainey said. “Overtime is cruel for one of the teams, but it was great to see Tracey get that goal and win it for us.”

Lorna MacFarlane, who drew praise from Rainey for the way she attacked the URI defense all match long, served up the ball that Mills sent home 36 seconds into overtime. The victory was Dartmouth’s first in extra time since 2016 after going 0-4 in extra sessions last season.

Dartmouth heads west this weekend with dates at Oregon on Friday and Oregon State on Sunday.
