Wolverhampton, England — A makeshift Liverpool team containing three teenagers making their senior debuts was beaten by Wolverhampton Wanderers, 2-1, in the third round of the FA Cup, with a long-distance strike by Ruben Neves sealing the win on Monday.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp showed where the competition ranked on the current English Premier League leaders’ list of priorities by leaving star forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino on the bench until the 70th minute, and they failed to have an impact after coming on.

Wolves went in front through Raul Jimenez in the 38th minute after James Milner lost possession in central midfield, but Liverpool equalized when Divock Origi scored from the edge of the area in the 51st.

Neves regained the lead for Wolves four minutes later, striking a low and fierce shot inside the near post past the initially unsighted Simon Mignolet.

Klopp started midfielders Rafael Camacho and Curtis Jones — aged 18 and 17, respectively — and sent on another debutant in 16-year-old Dutchman Ki-Jana Hoever in the sixth minute after center back Dejan Lovren sustained a hamstring injury.

Hoever, at 16 years and 354 days, became the youngest Liverpool player in FA Cup history and the third-youngest player to make a senior appearance for the team.

Liverpool has won the competition seven times, but not since 2006. It leads the league by four points after 21 games and is through to the round of 16 in the Champions League.

Martino Formally IntroducedAs New Mexico Coach

Mexico City — Aware Mexico is obsessed with reaching the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1986, Gerardo “Tata” Martino did not make any promises when he was introduced as El Tri’s new coach.

“I can’t answer how is it that I will be able to reach the fifth game of a World Cup that it’s going to be played in four years and when we still have the qualifying rounds ahead of us,” Martino said Monday. “It’s impossible to evaluate what will happen in four years when there is so much ahead of us.”

A former coach of Barcelona and Argentina’s national team, Martino joins Mexico after leading Atlanta United to Major League Soccer’s title last month in the expansion team’s second season.

Mexico upset Germany in its World Cup opener last year but lost, 2-0, to Brazil in the round of 16. El Tri reached the quarterfinals only in 1970 and 1986, both at home.

“What I’m aspiring to do is to have a reliable team as soon as possible, a team that knows how to play,” Martino said. “That is the ultimate pressure that we have now as a coaching staff.”

Martino is the third Argentine to coach Mexico after Cesar Luis Menotti (1991-92) and Ricardo La Volpe (2002-06).

Martino will debut with Mexico with friendly matches against Chile on March 22 at San Diego and four days later against Paraguay at Santa Clara, Calif. His first competitive match will be El Tri’s CONCACAF Gold Cup opener on June 15 at Pasadena, Calif.

American Weah JoinsScottish Champs on Loan

Glasgow, Scotland — Tim Weah, the U.S. striker and son of former AC Milan star George Weah, joined Scottish champion Celtic on a six-month loan deal from Paris Saint-Germain on Monday.

PSG allowed the 18-year-old Weah to leave on the day he signed a contract extension with the French team until June 2021.

Celtic does not have an option to buy Weah at the end of his loan spell.

Weah, who joined the PSG academy in 2014, has had limited opportunities in the first team, making just two league appearances this season and none since Aug. 18.

He will link up with Celtic on the team’s midseason training camp in Dubai.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said Weah was “hungry” and had “natural attributes in terms of his pace and technique.”

George Weah was a star striker for PSG and Milan in the 1990s, and in 1995 became the first and still the only African-born player to win FIFA’s world player of the year award and France’s Ballon d’Or. Weah was elected president of Liberia in December 2017.

Tim Weah was born in New York and raised in the U.S. He has made eight appearances for the U.S. team, scoring in a friendly against Bolivia in May, and can also play as an attacking midfielder.
