Claremont — Sullivan County residents who depended on the public bus service can climb back aboard beginning Tuesday morning in Newport, Claremont and Charlestown.

The bus service was suspended on Sept. 9 when the Community Alliance of Human Services closed its doors for financial reasons. Southwestern Community Services of Keene, N.H., has taken over the operation and will run it out of an office on Charlestown Road in Claremont.

According to a news release from Keith Thibault, chief development officer with Southwestern Community Services, the bus will run 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Newport; to and from Charlestown from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and in Claremont from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The bus runs only on weekdays, excluding holidays, and route information will be available from drivers.

Also part of the service is a “deviation route service” that will allow drivers to deviate from the established route for up to a quarter mile to pick up and drop off passengers. Deviation requests must be set up through the dispatcher, preferably a day in advance, at 603-477-9423 and must include the address where the passenger wants to be picked up.

On Oct. 17, Southwestern Community Services expects to resume the countywide volunteer driver program, which serves seniors and the disabled primarily but will accommodate others if possible.

The transportation program’s telephone service, 603-477-9423, will begin operating on Tuesday at 7 a.m.

The current contract with the state Department of Transportation, which was transferred from the Alliance, runs until next June, Thibault said last week.

Over the next several months, Southwestern Community Services will reach out to the communities it serves in an effort to increase the amount of local funding, which is needed to match the federal dollars received for the service.
