Charlotte, n.c. — FairPoint Communications is laying off at least 110 workers across New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine because of a downturn in its traditional telephone service, the company said on Friday.

The cuts amount to about 55 workers in New Hampshire, 20 workers in Vermont and 35 workers in Maine, company spokeswoman Angelynne Beaudry said. But union leaders had different numbers, some of which were as high as 150 or more. The cuts are in response to a double-digit decline in landline accounts over the past 12 months, part of a continuing decline.

“We’re in a highly competitive industry and we’ve seen our voice lines decline by nearly 11 percent in the past 12 months. As any prudent business would, we need to align the size of our workforce to meet the needs of the business,” Beaudry said.

The timetable for the layoffs was unclear on Friday. The union and company planned to meet on Monday to discuss the cuts.

Union officials said on Friday that the job reductions are going to further hurt the company’s ability to respond to customers.

The company, based in Charlotte, N.C., is already under fire over customer service in the region. Maine utility regulators are considering a $500,000 fine against FairPoint for failing to meet the state’s minimum service standards for landline customers.
