ORFORD — The Woodstock High boys basketball team rebounded from a season-opening loss to Burr & Burton with an impressive 52-44 road win over Rivendell on Wednesday evening.
Declan McCullough again paced the Wasps (1-1) with 22 points, matching his total against the Bulldogs. Ezra Lockhart added 11 and Zach Martsolf-Tan chipped in with 10. Woodstock put up 20 points in the second quarter, taking an 11-point lead at halftime.
Jacoby Patterson led the Raptors (1-1) with 19 points.
“Rivendell is very well-coached, and Patterson was very tough for us to defend,” Woodstock coach Steve Landon said. “We will work tomorrow to get better at the things we need to improve on and are happy tonight with a win.”
The Wasps host Stowe on Friday, the same day Rivendell travels to Springfield.
BRADFORD, Vt. — The Panthers opened the season with a road win over the Olympians, who fell to 1-2.
Thetford is at Blue Mountain on Friday, and Oxbow travels to Lyndon on the same day.
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Charlotte Jasmin scored 15 points and Paige Trombley added 12 to lead the Hurricanes past the Trojans in overtime in their season opener.
Hartford (1-0) hosts rival Woodstock on Saturday.
CLAREMONT — The Cardinals evened their record at 1-1 with the win over the Royals (1-2).
Stevens had a balanced offensive attack, getting 22 points from Kiley Bundy and 15 from Tara Sullivan. Emily Seiler had nine to lead Mascoma.
The Cards host Kearsarge on Friday, and the Royals will travel to Kearsarge next Tuesday.
WELLS RIVER, Vt. — The Raptors dropped to 0-2 with the loss to the Bucks. Ryleigh Butler led them with 11 points.
Rivendell is at Poultney on Monday.
WEST LEBANON — The Bears were on the brink of victory in their season opener, but the Bulldogs scored twice in the last two minutes of regulation — netting the equalizer with two seconds left on the clock — and then won it in overtime.
Jo Jo Drent made 40 saves for Hanover, which received goals from Wyatt Seelig, Jack Wilkinson and Jackson Watts. Henry Cotter had two assists, and Ryder Wilson, Jack Gardner, Julian Correa and Trevor Lichtenstein all had one.
“We played a gritty, tough game,” Bears coach Dick Dodds said. “So many of our players were playing their first high school game and the ones that had experience were playing different roles than they ever had, and all performed well. Playing a veteran, physical Bedford team was not an easy opener. That said, we should have closed them out.”
Hanover travels to Bishop Guertin on Saturday.
HENNIKER, N.H. — The Raiders trailed their season opener, 4-1, after two periods. Andrew Dannehy, Maddox Castro and Nick Dube scored for the visitors at New England College, the latter two notching their first varsity goals.
Lebanon was outshot, 32-10, with freshman goaltender Evan George making his first varsity start. The Raiders host Kennett on Saturday in another NHIAA Division III contest.
ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. — The Hurricanes, runners-up in the VPA Division II tournament last year, fell to the D-I Hornets on Wednesday night.
Ozzie DeFelice scored Hartford’s lone goal in the third period, with an assist from Blaine Gour on a power play. Essex scored once in each period.
Hartford (0-1) is at Colchester on Monday.
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — Freshman Dominic Palazzo made 22 saves for the Wasps, who trailed, 1-0, after two periods. Woodstock fell to 1-1.
ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. — The host Hornets led, 2-0, after a period, but the Hurricanes (2-0) stormed back from there to knock off their second straight D-I opponent to begin the season.
Hartford’s five goals came from five different players. Nedra Dwinnell set up Sophie Trombley to cut the deficit in half early in the second period and, 40 seconds later, Madison Barwood did it herself to tie the game.
The Canes took the lead late in the second on Zoe Zanleoni’s unassisted tally. They then added two more in the third, with Emma Bazin assisting Dwinnell and Moreno setting up Bazin. Nella Bowen made 19 saves.
Hartford returns to Barwood Arena to host Burlington/Colchester on Saturday.
WOODSTOCK — The defending VPA Division II champion Wasps fell to 1-1 with the loss to the Blades, a team made up of students from schools throughout Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, based in St. Johnsbury.
Woodstock jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on a pair of goals by Kassidy Haley, the first assisted by Gracelyn Laperle and the second unassisted. The lead held until the third, when the visitors tallied thrice in a two-minute span.
Alexandra Mosher had two goals for the Kingdom Blades.
The Wasps host South Burlington on Friday night.
TILTON, N.H. — Sophomore Austin Crowder, senior Asa Michetti, junior Connor Hobbs and sophomore Ethan Lewis all won their matches by pin for the victorious Royals.
Mascoma will compete in the Nor’easter Invitational on Saturday at Hollis-Brookline.
