The naturally occurring blue-green bacteria are appearing on the lake because of warm weather and weak winds, said officials, who also warned of danger to children and pets.
“What we have viewed … is minimal compared to what we read and hear about in Lake Champlain,” Selectboard Chairwoman Cathy McGrath said in an email on Tuesday. “Regardless, we are doing our best … to ensure that people understand the possible health risks associated with cyanobacteria.”
Those risks may include skin rashes, sore throats, diarrhea, stomach problems, or more serious health problems, officials said in an email to the town Listserv on Monday. Exposure risk is greater for children and pets because they are more likely to play near the water or drink water while swimming.
“If the lake is your source of household water and you are uncertain as to whether your filter removes cyanobacteria, your best bet is to play it safe and not use the water for now,” the Listserv post said.
The warning was issued on Monday and remained in place on Tuesday, as well as today, McGrath said.
