Essex, Vt. — Officials say an Essex high school has been deemed safe after police said an armed person threatened to appear, prompting a lockdown there and at five other schools in the area.

The Chittenden Central Supervisory Union says that person was not in the building today.

The schools had been in lockdown for much of the day.

VPR reports that a tentative release at Essex High School has been scheduled for 2:05 p.m.

The Essex Junction Fire Department tweeted that “students will be released [one] class at a time.”

The schools involved are Hiawatha Elementary, Summit Street School, Thomas Fleming School, Albert D. Lawton School (ADL), Essex High School and the Center for Technology.
