Rebecca McElvain, a 2019 Dartmouth graduate who was named interim head coach of the Dartmouth College sailing team last year, had that interim title removed last week and will continue to lead the program.

“We conducted a national search and spoke with outstanding candidates, and no one brought the same passion Rebecca has for elevating our program and for what makes Dartmouth truly special,” Dartmouth Director of Athletics and Recreation Mike Harrity said in a news release from the college.

McElvain headed an open squad that finished fifth at the ICSA Fleet Race Nationals and was named the NEISA Coach of the Year this past season.

“It is an honor to lead a program with such a rich tradition, passionate alumni, and exceptional student-athletes. I’m excited to continue building on Dartmouth Sailing’s legacy and pursuing championships at the highest level,” McElvain said in a news release from the college.

“Thank you to all the players and staff that I was fortunate enough to work with during my time at Dartmouth. This is a special place with amazing people that I feel lucky to have worked alongside,” Whitcher said in a news release from the college.

“I leave incredibly grateful for the experiences and relationships that have been formed in the last three years,” he added.

Zappitello, a defender and three-time All-American at Maryland as a player, will be tasked with coordinating the defense for a Dartmouth squad that ranked last in the Ivy League in goals-against average this past season (14.23).
