Can NH Republicans do simple math?
In an email reply to me, Senator David Rochefort quotes “uncertain revenues” as the reason he won’t support (yet another) corporate tax cut bill HB 155, another annual loss of ~$25 million for NH’s revenue. I appreciate his opposition. But he left unmentioned that the “uncertain revenues” are the direct responsibility of his party’s continuous tax breaks for those who can afford it most.
The Republican Party is tanking NH’s revenue. Since 2015, NH Republicans have cut nearly a billion dollars from annual revenue and passed the loss onto us through property taxes. Proportionately, NH’s lowest income earners pay more taxes than corporations and NH’s wealthiest residents. NH Republicans getting rid of the Interest & Dividends Tax on passive income alone has made a $150-$180 million dollar hole per year to either back fill through property taxes or end essential social programs. And let’s not forget the state unfairly funds education. NH Republicans are now pushing the downstream solution of privatizing/closing schools as opposed to responsibly legislating better funding, an obvious upstream solution that would provide immediate property tax relief, especially for rural small town residents like me.
The fixed income my husband and I are expecting in less than 20 years and the real potential for our property taxes to be over $10k would be a solid THIRD of our Social Security. NH Republicans, how do you legislate the financial ruin of your constituents and sleep at night? What are the goals of your party to help struggling NH families? From here it looks like you have none. Please legislate a fair tax code and increase the state’s contribution to school funding!
