Hartford, VT – After a long battle with cancer, Joseph John Alvin, often known to friends and family as Joe or ‘JJ’, passed away at the age of 84. A man of many talents and an interest in service, Joe left a mark on communities in California, Vermont, and beyond.
Born in Los Angeles, California to parents Joseph and Judith (Brown) Alvin, Joe showed an early interest in innovations utilizing electronics and community involvement. He worked as a Sheriff’s Deputy for California Highway Division before relocating to the East Coast and establishing a career in broadcast engineering. Joe served as the Head Engineer at WNNE, operating the satellite truck for their news division. He later transitioned to self-employment, founding and managing communication services companies, Centrapage and Valcom, for over 30 years.
Joe contributed to many community events including communications support for the Prouty and cooking with the Lions Club at the annual Glory Days event. He spent over 20 years volunteering with Boy Scouts of America, playing a significant role within the Green Mountain Council. He was active in the American Legion, Lions Club, and Elks Club, where he served as an “exalted ruler.”
Joe spent time in the great outdoors as a pilot, a scuba diver, hunter, and fisherman. Joe found particular joy in boating and winter sports. He taught many lessons locally at Whaleback and Storrs Hill, a bit more mellow than the ski days at Mammoth of his youth. He enjoyed travel, operating his Ham Radio, and telling tall tales.
Joe is survived by friends and family scattered throughout the country, his former spouse Marie, and his three children, Jennelle, Joseph, and Jonathan. His family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to caregivers who provided exceptional care with compassion and resilience during his difficult final months: Bayada Home Health and Bayada Hospice of the Upper Valley, Community Nurse Katie, and especially Kathy and Marc Mason.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 30th, 2026, from 3:30pm to 4pm with visitation 2-3:30 at the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon, NH.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Camp Silver Towers or Leaving MAGA.
