Norwich, VT – On May 5th, 2026, Peter Collier, a longtime resident of Norwich, died of ALS at the age of 76. Peter passed peacefully in his home surrounded by family. He spoke many times during the course of his illness about how lucky he felt to have a life filled with things he was grateful for and people he loved, making it so hard to say goodbye; his wife and lifelong love of 53 years, Carol, affectionately known as Ben, his daughter Rachel and her husband Will, his son Jared and his wife Melanie, and his four grandchildren were at the top of his list. He also leaves a sister, Karen, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. His greatest joy in life was time spent with family and friends, whether skiing with grandkids, scuba diving with his wife and kids in the Caribbean, going to fishing camp every year in Maine, or playing music with friends on Thursday nights.
Peter was born to a loving family in Mt. Vernon, NY in 1949. After college, he went on to earn his graduate degree in psychiatric social work, as well as two years of postgraduate training in couples and family therapy. He worked in the mental health field as a therapist for most of his adult life, including many decades of private practice.
There will be a gathering of family and friends in remembrance of Peter's life at 1pm Saturday, May 23, in the community room in Parish Hall (the rear of the Norwich Congregational Church). Bring a story and/or some finger food to share. No flowers please, but a donation instead to the Turning Point Club in Wilder, VT would be appreciated.
