UNITY โ€” At Saturday’s Town Meeting voters defeated two articles related to building a new fire station.

One article was to accept federal grant of $2.1 million for a new station and the second was to put the station on town land behind the town offices, neither article was recommended by the Selectboard.

Voters also defeated an article that would have discontinued a portion of North Slack Road.

The other 18 articles on the warrant passed including the $2 million town budget, $250,000 for roads and bridges fund, $50,000 for the fire department emergency vehicle reserve fund and money for several other reserve funds.

Of the town’s 1,025 registered voters, 87, or 8%, turned out to vote on Saturday.ย 

In ballot voting on March 10, voters elected Scott Powers to a one-year term on the Selectboard. With 66 votes, Powers beat out challengers Donald Freitas, 32 votes, and Lloyd Mills, 60 votes, for the seat.

Gary Ross was elected to a three-year term in an uncontested races.

Voters also elected Darlene Ayotte and Kelly Simpson to three-year terms on the School Board in ballot voting March 10. Ayotte earned 117 votes and Simpson, 78. They defeated Mark Gentes, who earned 63 votes.
