American values
This morning, I filled out an application to renew my passport. Have you ever read the various patriotic sayings printed at the top of each of the pages that are left blank for visa stamps? In 2016, on my old passport, these were still some of America’s values:
“Whatever America hopes to bring to pass in the world must first come to pass in the heart of America.” Dwight D. Eisenhower
“Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair.” George Washington
“It is immigrants who brought to this land the skills of their hands and brains to make of it a beacon of opportunity and hope for all men.” Herbert H. Lehman (former Governor and US Senator)
“The cause of freedom is not the cause of a race or a sect, a party or a class—it is the cause of humankind, the very birthright of humanity.” Anna Julia Cooper (African American educator)
“We send thanks to all the Animal life in the world. They have many things to teach us a people. We are glad they are still here and hope it will always be so.” Excerpt from Mohawk Thanksgiving Address
I wonder are these still our American values? Are they the values of the current administration? Will I find them on my new passport?
