New London, NH – Clare McCusker Bennett died peacefully at the New London Hospital on Thursday, November 13, 2025 three days before her 101st birthday.
Clare was born on November 16, 1924 in Claremont, NH to James and Gunhilde McCusker.
She graduated from Keene Teachers College with a teaching degree and went on to teach elementary age students and later in life did some substitute teaching.
Clare married Charles E. Bennett in 1950 and over the next ten years they had three children, Stephen, Deborah and Charles, Jr.
Clare was a kind, loving, patient and talented mother. She taught her children to enjoy the arts, taught them to ski and encouraged them to pursue individual goals.
Clare’s favorite place was “the cottage” on Mt. View Lake. Her father built it when she was a teenager and five generations have spent summers there over 86 years.
Clare was an active and dedicated member of St. Andrew’s Church in New London and a long time volunteer at the New London Hospital gift shop. Clare was an accomplished painter and a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration, Inc.
Clare is predeceased by her husband, Charles Bennett, her brother, James McCusker, Jr. and his wife, Dorothy McCusker, her nephew, James McCusker III, and her son-in-law, Wiley Scott, Jr. Surviving family members include her children, Stephen Bennett, Deborah Scott, and Charles Bennett, Jr. along with her daughters-in-law, Jane Holly Bennett and Susan Bennett; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
There will be a private family ceremony in the spring at Union Cemetery in Claremont.
