A former Grafton County prosecutor will avoid being prosecuted for domestic assault providing he adheres to the terms of an agreement that calls for him to participate in treatment programs and avoid contact with the victim.

Prosecutors have agreed to drop a single count of domestic violence โ simple assault against Michael Schauer, on conditions that he participate in mental health counseling and substance abuse treatment and remain on good behavior for three years, according to court documents.
Schauer, 41, formerly of Piermont was arrested and charged with violating a temporary domestic violence protective order that had been issued against him after he attempted to contact a protected party multiple times via text in September 2024.
Schauer is barred from having any unauthorized contact with the victim for three years and is subject to be prosecuted again if he fails to abide by the terms of the agreement, according to a conditional nol pros agreement dated Sept. 29.
Schauer had been prosecuting felony and misdemeanor offenses an assistant county attorney in the Grafton County State Attorneyโs office in North Haverhill since 2023 until he was placed on administrative leave following his arrest in September 2024.
