Chelsea, VT – Jay Steven Ratico, 71, passed away on July 28th, 2025 at the Hospice Center at Dartmouth after a brief illness. Jay was born and raised in Levittown, PA on December 16th, 1953 and later moved to Chelsea, Vermont where he homesteaded on Densmore Road for over 50 years.
Jay embodied the spirit of self reliance, independence, and deeply cared for his land and the natural world at large. Jay was proceeded by his mother Ruth G., his father Joseph, and his brother Richard Ratico. He is lived on by his nieces and nephews, his sister Helen Ratico and his daughter Amie Hutton-Crawford, her partner and their two daughters. Jay is remembered by his companion of 50 years Ramona O'Brien White of Hartford, Vermont and her children. Jay was a stone mason by trade, an avid rock/ice climber, a telemark skier, and lived an offgrid lifestyle.
There is no public memorial planned at this time, please in honor of Jay climb a mountain, light up a jay and enjoy the Green Mountains of Vermont.
