Exactly one week ago, the Hartford Hurricanes girls lacrosse team faced the Brattleboro Bears at home and fell 15-6 while missing multiple players.

Wednesday evening, at full strength, sixth-seeded Hurricanes got their revenge in the opening round of the Vermont Division II playoffs, knocking off 11th-seeded Brattleboro 12-5 and advancing to the quarterfinals.

“We were missing a few players the other night due to [HACTC] graduation, but it wasn’t just that. We played as a team tonight with everyone contributing,” first-year Hurricanes head coach Peter Vanderport said after the game.

Hartford struck first when junior midfielder Paisley Danaher scored the first of her three goals with just over five minutes left in the first quarter on a close shot that was well defended.

Senior midfielder Hailey Vanasse added a goal with just over two minutes left to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead after one quarter.

Three minutes into the second quarter, Brattleboro tied the game at 2-2, but senior midfielder Nella Bowen scored soon after to make it 3-2.

Hartford kept the momentum going as Danaher scored back-to-back goals at the 7:21 and 2:39 marks. Nine seconds later, freshman midfielder Bella Lombardi won the draw and scored immediately off the fast break to make it 6-2 going into halftime.

After halftime, Hartford carried that momentum forward as Lombardi scored her second goal just over a minute into the third quarter, increasing its lead to 7-2.

Later in the third, freshman utility player Nora Comeau, off an assist from Bowen, extending the Hurricanes’ lead to 8-3. Then Vanasse scored her second goal of the game, followed by Bowen’s second, to make it 10-3 going into the fourth.

Goals from senior defender Sadie Soukon and Bowen’s third helped Hartford put the game away.

Although she faced only four shots combined in the second and third quarters, senior goaltender Zoe Zanleoni was outstanding, saving 17 of 22 shots, including several on fast-break opportunities.

“It was probably one of our best games on defense. The girls communicated; they slid. It was a good communication game,” Zanleoni said. “I’m very proud of our girls.”

Hartford will travel to face third-seeded Mount Abraham on Friday with the game expected to start at 4:30 p.m.
