Hanover boys, girls win Mills Riverside Invitational

With the NHIAA Cross Country Championships on tap Saturday, the Hanover High Bears appear more than ready to defend their 2024 Division II titles.

On Saturday, both the girls and boys squads took first place at the Mills Riverside Invitational at Mills Riverside Park in Jericho, Vt.

Hanoverโ€™s Issac McNaughton won the boys 5,000 meter race in 16:23 with teammate Ben Groves finishing second among 75 runners. For the girls, Megan Faris was third and Aria Deeb fourth in the field of 57 runners with Acadia Enman of Mt. Mansfield Union first in a time of 18:34. Other finishes for the Hanover girls were Lila Muirhead (6th) , Millie Larrick (8th), Lila Marchetti (9th), Grace Stewart (12th), and Alice Bell (13th). Alexander Collins was (4th), Will Hanaway (6th), Rohan Novosad (7th), Ben Hourdequin (9th), and Rhys Jones (10th) for Hanover.

โ€œOur race plan asked the boys and girls to do something different as we shape training for the State race next week in Manchester,โ€ Hanover coach Eric Piconni said. โ€œThey executed the plan and ran extremely well.โ€

The boysโ€™ finishes, seven in the top 10. is a โ€œrare sight,โ€ Piconni said, giving Hanover and comfortable win.

โ€œAn indomitable pack of Hanover girls moved up after a progressive start,โ€ Piconni said. โ€œThe girls loaded a scoring five in the Top-10 and secured the win.โ€

Results: Hanover 20, Mt. Mansfield 51, Essex 66, Champlain Valley Union 116, Colchester 147. Girls -Hanover 30, Essex 50, Mt. Mansfield Union 81, Champlain Valley Union 85.

Woodstockโ€™s Sluka 3rd in SVL A Championships

Mary Sluka of Woodstock Union High School finished the 5,000 meter Southern Vermont League Cross Country Championship race in third place among 57 runners with Sydney Remenar of Burr and Burton Academy winning with a time of 18:46.

For the boys, Thetford Academyโ€™s Ollie Emery was seventh in a field of 81 runners at the Bellow Falls Union High School course and teammate Peter Horan ninth. Nico Conathan-Leach of Brattleboro Union won in 16:07.

Thetford Academyโ€™s Madeline Piecuch was 14th and teammate Meredith Sloop 18th. Other finishes included Aurora Hensel-Whalen, Woodstock (21st), Lola Squire, Thetford (28th), Aven Westbrook, Woodstock (29th), and Annalies Currier, Thetford (30th). For the Thetford boys, Zac Amber finished 14th, Christopher Payson (20th), Paul Hesser (29th), and Paul Kidd (30th). Zach Peterman was 32nd and Shawn Harriman 37th for Woodstock.

โ€œCoach (Emily) Silver and I were thrilled to see so many large PRs (personal records) from our race on the same course early in the season,โ€ Thetford coach Joseph Deffner said.
